Herb was born September 10, 1931 to Herbert and Dorothy Werner in Quinter, Kansas. He was the second of 5 children. He attended schools in Kansas and Colorado, graduating from high school in Westminster, Colorado. When his family moved back to Kansas, he worked building agricultural terraces, and operating a combine following the wheat harvest through the states of Kansas and Oklahoma.
In 1953, he joined the U.S. Navy for a 4-year enlistment. While stationed in San Diego, he met his future wife, Coreen, and they were married December 22, 1956. Upon discharge from the Navy, they moved to Salem, Oregon, where they raised their three children.
Herb worked several years at Salem General Hospital as office manager, and later spent 23 years as an auditor for the Oregon Dept. of Revenue. He retired in 1993. Herb enjoyed gardening as well as taking meticulous care of his lawn and beautifying it with flowers. Many years were happily spent camping with friends and family. During road trips to Iowa and Kansas visiting relatives, he always planned sightseeing trips to many western National Parks as well as various parts of Canada.
His faith in Christ was evident in his daily life, as well as always being available to answer the many Bible questions as the children were growing up. He served 10 years on the Governing Board of Salem Alliance Church when Don Bubna was pastor.
He is survived by his wife, Coreen; children Steve, Eric, and Kristi (Jack) Sisco; and siblings Doris Speer, Lloyd Werner, Rosemary Dunn and Gary Werner, and many nieces and nephews.
Burial will be private at Willamette National Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Focus on the Family, an organization that Herb faithfully supported.
