Charles Rodney (Rod) Sabine

February 22, 1927 — December 30, 2020

On December 30, 2020, Charles Rodney Sabine, passed away at the age of 93 with his wife and daughter by his side. Charles, better known to his friends as Rod was born February 22, 1927 to Stanley and Catherine (Burgess) Sabine in Bridgeton Maine. On September 26, 1947 he married Beverly Ann Buxton. They raised three sons, and three daughters. Rod was the 2 nd oldest of five boys, Stanley Sabine Jr, Richard Sabine, Lawrence Sabine, and Louis Sabine. Rod was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Catherine Sabine Sr, and three of his siblings. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Beverly; his sons, Clayton of Ghana, Africa, Steve (Kathe) of Redmond, Oregon, Scott (Shari) Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and daughters Randie (Ron) of Salem, Oregon, Shelley (Orrin) Fitzgerald of Canaan, Maine and Wanda (Michael) of Sagle, Idaho, his brother Richard (Minnie Lou) of Allen, Texas, Sister-in-law Helen of Sabattus, Maine,  and Sister-in-law Hazel Abbott of Sun City West, Arizona, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rod moved to Skowhegan, Maine at the age of 15. From the very first job he held when he was in the 8 th grade working maintenance for a nursing home throughout his entire work life when he was a responsible, hard worker with top notch work ethics which in instilled in many of his children and grandchildren. He was drafted into the service and served in the Army from May 1945 to Jan 1947. He married Beverly Sept 1947. He often worked two or three jobs at a time to provide for his family. He worked for almost twenty years for the State of Maine Women’s Correctional Center. In 1979 he moved to be closer to his adult children who had all moved to Oregon. He worked with and for his sons for several years. He and Beverly managed an apartment complex in Keizer for a few years then Rod went to work for the State of Oregon at the Hillcrest School doing maintenance. He worked for about 5 years until he retired.

Rod started attending the Nazarene church at the age of 15 in Skowhegan, Maine. After moving to Oregon, he found, and had since been attending the Salem First Church of the Nazarene on Market St in Salem, Oregon.

Rod will be missed by all who knew him. Although kind of quiet in nature, he was well respected and loved. He had a strong spiritual faith which he leaned on during his previous bout with cancer. He was a kind man, always willing to help someone that needed a hand. He had lots of friends but some very close lifelong friends whom he cherished.

A military honors ceremony is scheduled for January 21, 2021 at 11:30 at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Or. Assisting is Johnsons Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service January 23, at 1:00 p.m. at Salem First Church of the Nazarene located at 1550 Market St NE, Salem Oregon.
