Arla “Liz” Leslie Casey

March 17, 1953 — April 1, 2024

Arla "Liz" Leslie Casey passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 1, 2024. Liz was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1953, to Joyce and Arlo Murken in Des Moines, Iowa. She is survived by her two siblings, older brother David Murken and younger brother Joseph Murken. She grew up loving her family, good friends, and horses; her sense of adventure led to many fascinating travels and tales.

Liz attended Western Illinois University, where she met her best friend and the love of her life, her husband, Jay Casey. They married on his birthday, July 29, 1978, and every year he would remind her that she is the best present he could ever ask for. She considered herself the luckiest lady in the world to have found her soul mate to share life with.

Liz worked in her early career as a Copy Boy and Editorial Receptionist at the Chicago Tribune. After moving to Rockford, Illinois, she was a Switchboard Operator and then an Advertising Sales Representative for the Rockford Register Star. She also managed a customer service team for T-Mobile in Salem, Oregon after relocating to the area. Her colleagues recall her quick wit, bright eyes, and inspiring spirit.

Liz’s dream to become a mother was fulfilled by the birth of her two daughters, Elizabeth “Ella” Core, married to Adam, and Gabrielle “Gael” Zimmerman, married to Zach. Gael blessed her with two grandchildren, Abram and Graham. She also assumed guardianship of Kirsten Borst, married to Toby Fisher, from the time she was 13 years old, adding another sister to the family. Her family was her dream come true, and she often told them they were all she ever wanted.

Liz is remembered fondly for her laughter, her practical jokes, and her loving nature. She gave the best hugs and talked with her eyes, deep wells of unconditional love and passion. She loved surprises of all kinds and beating everyone at card games. She will also be remembered for all the heart she shared with her good friends. She truly loved each of them- and if you knew her, you knew it.

The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that you pray for peace in Jesus Christ’s name. Services will be private.
