Alice Joyce Doumitt passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the age of 92. Joyce’s life was shaped by strength, faith, and a generous commitment to others.
As a young child, she and her family left the drought -choked plains of Oklahoma during the Great Depression, seeking a better life in the Pacific Northwest after the devastation of the Dust Bowl. The family eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, where she would grow up in foster care.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School, and soon after began working at Pacific Bell, where her kind and dutiful nature made her a valued colleague. It was during this time that she met Richard Doumitt, who would become her beloved husband and lifelong companion. Together, they raised two sons, Casey and Rhett, who were the pride of her life.
Though she grew up in hardship, Joyce’s heart was always open to others. She found deep comfort and purpose in her faith, converting to Catholicism as a young adult. Her devotion to the church was quiet, but unwavering. She spent years volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, and cooking for the priests in St. Josephs church in Salem Oregon, where she was a devout parishioner. She was known for her charitable nature, often lending a helping hand to those in need with the empathy of someone who had once been in their shoes.
Joyce believed in service not as a duty, but as a calling. Whether through charity, comforting a friend or neighbor, or sharing a home-cooked meal, she poured herself into the lives of those around her. Her compassion was not performative—it was simply who she was.
She lived simply but fully, with laughter in her home and warmth in her heart. Her friends loved her for her sense of humor and ever-present wit. She taught by example: how to live with grace, to give without expecting, to enjoy friendships, and to find faith even in the leanest of times.
Joyce is survived by her sons Casey and Rhett, and a circle of extended family, friends, and community members who were touched by her kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul in her honor (https://ssvpusa.org/donate/).
