Obituary

Herb was born September 10, 1931 to Herbert and Dorothy Werner in Quinter, Kansas. He was the second of 5 children. He attended schools in Kansas and Colorado, graduating from high school in Westminster, Colorado. When his family moved back to Kansas, he worked building agricultural terraces, and operating a combine following the wheat harvest through the states of Kansas and Oklahoma.

In 1953, he joined the U.S. Navy for a 4-year enlistment. While stationed in San Diego, he met his future wife, Coreen, and they were married December 22, 1956. Upon discharge from the Navy, they moved to Salem, Oregon, where they raised their three children.

Herb worked several years at Salem General Hospital as office manager, and later spent 23 years as an auditor for the Oregon Dept. of Revenue. He retired in 1993. Herb enjoyed gardening as well as taking meticulous care of his lawn and beautifying it with flowers. Many years were happily spent camping with friends and family. During road trips to Iowa and Kansas visiting relatives, he always planned sightseeing trips to many western National Parks as well as various parts of Canada.

His faith in Christ was evident in his daily life, as well as always being available to answer the many Bible questions as the children were growing up. He served 10 years on the Governing Board of Salem Alliance Church when Don Bubna was pastor.

He is survived by his wife, Coreen; children Steve, Eric, and Kristi (Jack) Sisco; and siblings Doris Speer, Lloyd Werner, Rosemary Dunn and Gary Werner, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will be private at Willamette National Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Focus on the Family, an organization that Herb faithfully supported.

Messages of Sympathy

  1. Elwyn Taylor of Ames, Iowa says:

    Herb was a fine man. I respect him highly. He had a good life of many years.
    "Because I could not stop for Death,
    He kindly stopped for me;
    The carriage held but just ourselves
    and immortality." ..~ Emily Dickinson

  2. Dennis & Patti Ricker says:

    One of my memories of Uncle Herb, is when I was visiting back in Iowa, and I was probably 11 or 12 years old. I was trying to figure out how to tie a couple of knots for a Boy Scout badge. I asked my Dad if he knew how to do it, and he said, "no, but ask your Uncle Herb, because he used to tie those knots in the Navy". Sure enough,...I got a knot-tying lesson. He was a gentle, quiet, and patient man. --Love you guys

  3. Clay & Audrey Ricker says:

    Herb and I served as swabbies aboard the USS ORCA AVP-49 back in 1954. I introduced Herb to Coreen (my wife's sister) and that was the beginning of a good relationship. God's Blessing to this closely knit family. Remember all the great times we had together and the joyous reunion in Heaven.

  4. Bryan Schaap says:

    Dear Werner family - I’m so sorry for your deep loss. Even though in recent years our paths crossed infrequently, I always enjoyed chatting with Herb when I had the chance. He was always a warm, friendly, “fruit of the Spirit” kind of man who was genuinely interested in those with whom he came into contact. Through church, numerous camping trips, and those great years living down the road from each other, our families were intertwined in a way that resulted in so many fond memories. I know his faith was in Jesus, and I’m confident he is now experiencing the LIFE beyond life! I’m so glad we have hope in the coming eternal reunion. My prayers for God’s peace and comfort now and in the days ahead. With love, Bryan
