Obituary

Lorri Lynn Cooper, 60, of Salem, Oregon, passed away Thursday, February 7 after a three year battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Albany, Oregon on October 11, 1958 to Bill and Karen Mayhew. After the death of her mother, Marilyn Erickson Mayhew joined the family, adopting and raising Lorri and her sister. Lorri was raised in Renton, Washington and graduated from Tyee High School. She attended Puget Sound Christian college for two years before marrying Val Cooper. They lived in Monmouth, Oregon and were married from 1980 to 2010.

Lorri worked for many years as a bookkeeper for a variety of businesses in Monmouth, Oregon. She also drove school bus for Santiam Christian Schools from 1992 to 1998. Lorri worked for the State of Oregon from 1998 to present, most recently as an Executive Support for the Water Resources division.

Lorri played piano on a worship team for her church for 40 years. She loved to cook and was passionate about quilting. In recent years, she began playing pool competitively. She loved people and often invited people into her home.

She is survived by four children: Rebecca Wages of Springfield, Oregon, Jennifer McMullen of Salem, Oregon, Carolynn Esary of Corvallis, Oregon, and Jonathan Cooper of Omaha, Nebraska. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, her father Bill Mayhew, and her sister Marsha Gustkey.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 12, 3 pm at Gateway Foursquare Church in Salem, Oregon.

  3. Agnes Hoiseth says:

Lorri and I had so much fun working together. We had plans to get together not knowing time was so short..a lesson I will never forget. She had so many talents and I loved her humor and her love for God and family. Praying for you at this most difficult time.

  4. Mariah says:

I am so sorry for your loss and the impact that it has on your whole family. When we go through something like this, it can be easy for us to feel a sense on discouragement, but it seems like she had an appreciation for the hope that the Bible provides. I have gone through a similar situation with my grandmother, but what has helped me is meditating on the scriptures that can give us hope for the future. In summary, the scripture found in 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 says “ ... the father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials.” So this scripture reminds us how comforting our creator is, especially in difficult times. The Bible also gives us a hope that we will see our loved ones and to never have to experience something as unnatural as losing our dear ones. In 1 Corinthian 15:26 it says that the last enemy death is to be brought to nothing. This is definitely a time that we can all look forward to and I hope that you are able to draw some comfort for what Gods promises have in store for us.

  5. Cathy and Greg Bahler says:

Greg and I were sorry to hear of Lorri’s passing. We knew the cancer had returned but it’s aggressiveness this time caught us by surprise.
We thought she had more time.
I am glad that she is home, but mourn the loss of who she was here on earth.
What a great gal with sooo many talents that she let shine!
My prayers of comfort are with those who will miss her.

  6. Pam Ward says:

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lorri’s beautiful family who she loved so well and so very deeply. I know they will miss her dearly……as will all the rest of us who were so powerfully impacted by her love, kindness, generosity and precious friendship……Lorri was such a beautiful gift to us all. We love you Lorri dear but are sooo thankful we will see you again. We know you are with our Lord and Savior in a place of incredible, inexpressible love, joy and peace. See you soon dear sister and friend. Thanks for loving all of us.

  7. Kathy Burton says:

Lorri was my next door neighbor for many years and I watched their children grow up and become wonderful adults. My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family and she will be missed. I so glad we kept in touch through Facebook.

  8. Sheila Buchholz says:

My mom passed away from the same thing in October. When I would take my mom to her Doctors appointments, many times we would see each other, and although we weren’t really close at work, we sort of had this unspoken bond because of going through this terrible disease together. I feel the pain all over again, not only for us, but for all of you and all that suffer from cancer. It’s such an unfair illness. Lorri was a beautiful woman, and will be missed terribly by many. My thoughts are with you.

  9. Agnes Foster says:

We will miss you Lori, especially when I look over at the piano at church. Praying for your kids and family. I am comforted in knowing you are with Jesus. Seeing Him face to face.

  10. Laura Erickson says:

I have not been able to stop thinking of Lorri since I heard about this. I am so sorry she is gone. My Mom died a while back of pancreatic cancer , it was very quick and she was also taken way too soon. We have lost a beautiful woman and I am sorry I didn't reach out to her more. I will miss her.
