Obituary

Craig Kuhns, age 46, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2019 surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born on February 1, 1972, to Beverly and Mike Kuhns in Salem. He is survived by his parents, brother Ryan, sister and brother-in-law, Kristin and Shane Britton, nephew Aidan, and his partner Steve Reed. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Blanca, and his cat Paris.

Craig loved cars from an early age and could name the brand of nearly every car on the road. His pride and joy was a 1955 Chevrolet 2-door that he and his Dad restored to perfection.

For the past 19 years, Craig was a beloved bus driver for the Beaverton School District, and he loved his kids. Traveling abroad and sometimes closer to home in a vintage trailer he restored with his brother and dad brought him a great deal of joy. He was very family oriented and loved big holiday gatherings. Naturally sentimental, he saved birthday cards, antique grape clusters, teapots, and various items from grandparents.

Craig will be greatly missed by his large extended family and many close friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 26, 2019 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at the Oregon Garden Resort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Oregon Humane Society.

Messages of Sympathy

  1. Joan Berry Lulow says:

I am so sorry for your family's great loss. I only saw Craig a few times, but it was obvious what a beautiful, kind, loving, thoughtful soul he had. Wish I could have come to his celebration of life yesterday.

  2. Nate Moore says:

I trained Craig how to drive a school bus at BSD. He is in my mind one of the coolest guys and easy to talked. The guy was scared to drive a bus but did it for 18years. I will miss you bud. My you rest in paradise.

  3. Monica K. Lee says:

I had the pleasure of partying with Craig in early 2018, the first and only time I got to meet him. He was so funny and nice, I knew instantly he was one of my "people". Although I didn't know him well, I know he's sorely missed by everyone he's touched. My prayers are with everyone who knew him, for a peaceful recovery from this great loss.

  4. Kathy Hall says:

Craig was a wonderful bus driver. He drove my girls to Cedar Mill Elem. for eight years. He was so kind and I knew the girls were in good hands. He will be missed by the students he drove. RIP

  5. Gary and Rose Wilson says:

Rose and I have known Craig ever since he came into our son Steve’s life almost sixteen years ago. We have spent Holidays, Birthdays, Family gatherings and even an Alaskan Cruise with him. Craig loved people especially kids and was always a joy to be around. He had such a sweet smile dimples in his cheeks and made you feel warm all over. We are very saddened that he has left us at such an early age and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all those people that he has touched throughout his life. He was a good man with a kind and gentle soul that has left us with nothing but caring and fun -loving memories. We miss you Craig, but you will always be with us in our hearts and in our mind

  6. Elyse says:

My younger sister and I rode Craig's bus all throughout elementary school. He was, without a doubt, the best bus driver ever. It's been over 10 years since we were privileged enough to ride his bus, but just last week he came up in our family conversation: "I wonder what Craig is up to. He really was the best."

We are so sorry to hear of his passing. Our condolences to all who were close to him.

  7. Wendy Bax says:

Craig was my daughters' first bus driver in elementary school. We - my family and the other Cedar Mill families he served - thought so very highly of him. My girls thought he was the best driver they ever had.
When my oldest was in high school, he found her and gave her the apology note she had to write for being naughty on the bus as an elementary student. They both laughed at that. He was just that kind of thoughtful, special person. He just came to my mind again the other day. My thoughts and prayers go out to Craig's loved ones.

  8. Debra Warren says:

These are not my words, but were on a card I received, and they perfectly describe my feelings about Craig:
Those we love don't go away, they live within us everyday. Loved and missed, we hold them near. Unseen, unheard but forever dear.

  9. Gaylene (Grossen) Runey says:

My friend and fellow car nut Craig. I'll never forget getting to know you so many years ago at BSD, our Vegas slot tournament trip, you loaning me your crooked-a** shades when I forgot mine, the parties, the picnics, the 350Z and what you wanted me to do with it! All the shenanigans... you will never be forgotten. My sincerest condolences to your family. You're gone too soon, but I hope you are finally at peace. Love you.

  10. Jeffrey Anderson says:

I really got to know Craig when we both had a sports run at Sunset high school. I came over to his bus and he invited me in and we must of talked for at least an hour. I always enjoyed the fact of his love for cars. He had that inherent wit and sense of humor about him. I also remember a in service all bus drivers had to attend. Craig and Tonya were sitting in back of Mark Maguire and I, and no he's not the retired baseball player. So Craig gives Mark these hilarious flip cards with funny expressions that you put up to your face. Mark and I would share the cards as we turned around and preformed our high jinks. Craig was laughing hilariously and I think Tonya approached being incontinent for the first time in her life. Maybe the second. Jury's still out on that one! Anyway, loved the guy and what a gentle soul to grace all of our lives. I feel blessed knowing Craig. I wonder what kind of car he's driving now? To infinity and beyond!
